The project is intended to originate an essay-length study of the situation of the Spanish language in this country, including but not limited to its use in Hispanic/Latino communities, the press, radio, and television, education, government, and other areas, as well as the influence of English on Spanish and vice-versa, code-switching, bilingualism, and related topics.
Role: The research assistant will be expected to locate and identify and download or otherwise save academic and non-academic articles and news items on the various aspects of the Spanish language in the United States listed in the general description of the project.
Expected learning outcomes include increased proficiency in research (online as well as other sources such as libraries), as well as an opportunity to deepen their familiarity with the situation of Spanish in this country.
Qualifications: Fluency in English and Spanish (a minimum of 2+ years of college Spanish; native or semi-native proficiency preferred); interest in the situation of Spanish in the U.S.; a strong level of efficiency in online and library research; some formal instruction in linguistics and/or Spanish linguistics is highly desirable.
