Apprenticeship in Laboratory Animal Medicine with Veterinary and Husbandry Staff

The role of the veterinarian in the research environment has become increasingly critical in recent years. Not only are lab animal veterinarians involved in research involving animal health, but in research endeavors as they relate to and intersect with human or public health (e.g., nutrition, cancer studies, and infectious disease models such as tuberculosis and COVID) as well.
This apprenticeship is designed to provide the student with an introduction to a career in veterinary medicine and animal husbandry in the laboratory setting.
This is a one semester position with the option to renew.
Role: Apprentices will work closely with campus research veterinarians, veterinary nurses, and animal husbandry technicians who oversee the daily management, care, health, and welfare of the research animals on UC Berkeley campus. The apprentice will get hands on experience in general animal care and husbandry, health surveillance and monitoring, diagnostic and therapeutic techniques, and research medicine. The student will shadow and interact with a variety of people in the department, including animal care staff, veterinary nurses, veterinarians, and research staff.
Qualifications: Required: Successful applicants must have a strong interest veterinary medicine as a career. They should also be eager to learn, self-motivated to perform routine tasks, and punctual. A time commitment of 6-8 hours (in 3 hour blocks) per week is required.
