Finfluencers

Closed. This professor is continuing with Fall 2024 apprentices on this project; no new apprentices needed for Spring 2025.

In this project we plan to study the effect of financial influencers on asset markets. We will identify influencers in popular general platforms (e.g., twitter, instagram) and platform more specific for investments (e.g., StockTwits). We plan to study for both stocks and cryptocurrencies trading activities and return performances of retail and institutional investors after influencers mention stocks and cryptocurrencies in their posts.

Role: The main tasks will be: 1) scrape a large amount of data on influencers post from platforms; (2) merge different data sources; (3) create summary statistics tables and event study plots around influencers' posts; (4)
run some preliminary analysis on the newly created dataset to study patterns in prices and trading across different stocks and cryptocurrencies.

Qualifications: Qualifications: Data scraping / analysis using Stata, Matlab, R, or Python. Interest in Finance, Trading and Cryptocurrency a plus.

Day-to-day supervisor for this project: Gene Kang

Hours: to be negotiated

Off-Campus Research Site: On campus but flexible working from home is allowed.
