Educators Responding to Disaster: Documenting California's Efforts to Promote Well-Being in Schools After the Emergence of a Novel Coronavirus (entry-level)
Valerie Shapiro, Professor
Social Welfare
Closed. This professor is continuing with Spring 2024 apprentices on this project; no new apprentices needed for Fall 2024.
A statewide effort was launched in 2020 to respond to pandemic-accelerated social and emotional needs of young people in schools. This project aims to build capacity at County Offices of Education around California to become regional hubs to support the delivery of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) in schools.
UC Berkeley is a partner in this project around all things data. First, this involves supporting the planning team (1) to learn what things are happening around the state, (2) to get feedback from participants for continuous improvement of the initiative, and (3) to describe our activities and impact for the sake of meeting the reporting requirements of the funder.
Second, this involves building an archive to document and study all of the efforts to promote wellbeing and equity upon the reopening of California schools. This will enable artifacts of the initiative to be used for research for research purposes.
Role: We are seeking an additional undergraduate student to assist us with transitioning initiative materials (e.g., plans, event flyers, meeting transcripts, feedback forms) into the research archive. This includes de-identifying materials so that the names of people and organizations are removed, cataloguing and storing electronic materials, and transcribing meeting recordings. Students will learn about protocols for coding data and storing it securely. Students will also gain familiarity with the K-12 education system (e.g., what does a County Office of Education do?) and implementation strategies for Social and Emotional Learning (e.g., improving school climate).
NOTE: This project participates in the LAEP program that enables underrepresented undergraduate students who have filed for financial aid to earn money in research-related positions in order to help reduce their educational costs. You may simultaneously earn academic credit for successful completion of this apprenticeship. If you are interested in participating in the LAEP program, please *affirm your eligibility* in your application. Eligibility criteria are: a) California resident, b) Enrolled in 6 or more units / good academic standing, c) Filed a FAFSA or CADAA and have work-study eligibility, and d) Eligible to work in the U.S., including current DACA holders.
We value equity and inclusion; Students from different backgrounds, with diverse identities and experiences, are all encouraged to apply.
Qualifications: This apprenticeship is appropriate for a student seeking an introduction to research processes and to our research team. This position requires computer skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work diligently and independently. Students will be required to complete asynchronous, online training about research ethics and the basics of social and emotional learning. Students will need to have the capacity for 6-8 hours of contribution to the project during every week of instruction, adjusted for university holidays. Our ideal student will have interest in a multi-year commitment to a research team with escalating roles and responsibilities. Students will be given a work station in Haviland Hall. Students will be directly supervised by an alum of the UC Berkeley URAP program who is now working as a graduate student researcher.
