Photography of the Gulag
Aglaya Glebova, Professor
Art History
Closed. This professor is continuing with Spring 2024 apprentices on this project; no new apprentices needed for Fall 2024.
This book project examines photographs and photographic albums of the gulags, or Soviet forced labor camps, from the 1930s onwards, in particular the little-known visual legacy of the gulag system in Kazakhstan, and its relationship to forced sedentarization. These state-produced images entirely elide the violence of the forced labor campus; how and what do they communicate about these spaces and institutions and their place in the environment and history they suppress and (claim to) transform?
Role: * Bibliographic research on the gulag in Kazakhstan and 20th century history of Kazakhstan
* Research and organize images of the gulag, incl. through online archives and databases
Qualifications: A strong interest in art history and/or history, and experience with bibliographic research in the humanities. Student researcher should enjoy archival and bibliographic work, and be organized and independent. Knowledge of Russian helpful but not required.
Day-to-day supervisor for this project: Zack Kelly
