Applications for Fall 2024 are closed for this project.
The Berkeley folklore archive is one of the largest, student-created folklore archives in North America. Started in the 1960s, the archive houses over 500,000 records detailing the everyday life and informal culture of thousands of students and their communities. In 2020, the archive began digitizing these records. Along with digitizing the records, we are developing two new aspects of the project: (1) a flexible search and indexing system for the newly digitized archive, making use of AWS S3 and Elasticsearch, and (2) implementing an online archiving system, so that student collections are "born digital".
Role: There are opportunities for students in both task 1 and task 2.
Students in task 1 will help design and implement an Elasticsearch infrastructure for indexing and searching the digitized records. We will also develop a prototype front end for the search, that will provide broad access to the collection while taking into account aspects of privacy. The search engine should be able to access (a) newly digitized materials and (b) materials entered in task 2.
Students in task 2 will help localize and implement a LAMP stack application for current students to input their fieldwork.
Qualifications: Students for task 1 should have experience with AWS, S3 and elasticsearch. Experience with Javascript. Interest in exploring open source interfaces such as Goobi.
Students for task 2 should have LAMP stack experience and willingness to think through new possibilities for the application, including integration with the interface in task 1.
Hours: to be negotiated
