The Psychological Experience of Being Misunderstood
Erica Bailey, Professor
Business, Haas School
Applications for Fall 2024 are closed for this project.
A core human desire is to express and share our inner world with others. However, try as we might, we often fail to do so fully. In fact, a central human experience is being misunderstood by others. While common, we currently know very little about the psychological consequences of feeling misunderstood. The current research project seeks to fill that void to understand when and how react to being misunderstood by others.
In this research project, we will experimentally induce the experience of being (mis)understood and measure the affective outcomes associated with this experience.
Qualifications: Undergraduate research apprentices will assist in conducting the experiment in the Behavioral Lab at Haas. This will consist of obtaining informed consent from participants, setting up the study rooms, observing the study as it is ongoing, answering any questions that may arise through the course of the experiment, debriefing participants, and tracking participation.
