Closed (1) Monuments and the Law

Applications for Spring 2019 are now closed for this project.

This is a project to research legal issues surrounding memorials and/or monuments. I would be asking the mentee to look up laws and ordinances or legal cases that restricted behavior around memorials, both in the U.S. and Europe.

Research would be directed at looking up legal cases, statutes, and other evidence of ordinances directed at limiting behavior around public monuments. This might include looking through newspaper indexes and microfilm, as well as working with a reference librarian at the Law Library. The learning outcomes include figuring out how to do this sort of original research, working through the different ways that a problem like this might be approached, and building a bibliography on the topic.

Qualifications: Imagination and the endurance to look through sources, including microfilm. Also an ability to ask questions of librarians would be helpful.

Weekly Hours: to be negotiated
