Timothy Hampton, Professor

Closed (1) Undergraduate Humanities Writer

Applications for fall 2021 are now closed for this project.

Berkeley’s Townsend Center for the Humanities features a lively program of lectures, workshops, and public conversations, and helps to support many other humanities-related events across campus.

The URAP apprentice would follow, research, and write about events and programs in the humanities at UC Berkeley, both at the Townsend Center and elsewhere on campus. Pieces will appear in Townsend Center publicity outlets, including our blog, Bear's-Eye View, and may be used in campus-wide publicity and publications as well.

This position would enable the apprentice to become better informed about the academic study of the humanities and the wealth of humanities programs and events on campus, while gaining practice translating what they learn into compelling and accessible prose.

Qualifications: Applicants are encouraged to include samples of any public-facing writing they have done, either online or in print.

Closed (2) Poetry and Music: Leonard Cohen

Closed. This professor is continuing with Spring 2021 apprentices on this project; no new apprentices needed for Fall 2021.

For a critical study of the work of the Canadian poet, novelist, singer and songwriter Leonard Cohen, a student researcher is needed to help with preliminary research.

The student would work with the professor on setting up a critical bibliography and collecting materials about Cohen, his writing, and music. Research would involve tracking down resources, critical reading and annotation, reading in critical theory, and working with the professor to determine which materials are most appropriate and helpful in terms of pinning down themes and contexts for a critical study.

Qualifications: Good knowledge of literary history. Interest in critical theory and methods of cultural analysis. Interest in poetry and music. Some knowledge of either Spanish, French, or Greek would also be helpful.
