Closed (1) American Cultures 30th Anniversary Exhibit

Closed. This professor is continuing with Spring 2021 apprentices on this project; no new apprentices needed for Fall 2021.

The American Cultures (AC) Center and the 30th anniversary committee is planning to host a series of virtual events and develop virtual library exhibits In celebration of the 30th anniversary of the AC Breadth Requirement in Fall 2021. Fought for throughout the latter half of the 1980s, agreed upon by campus faculty in 1989, and the first courses launched in 1991, the AC Requirement constitutes a new approach that responds directly to the problem encountered in numerous disciplines of how better to present the diversity of American experience to the diversity of American students whom we now educate.
The 30th anniversary exhibits and events will help showcase the history of this requirement, from its early day of student and faculty protests, to current courses and innovative, theoretical, and analytical approaches relevant to understanding race, culture, and ethnicity in the U.S.

The student will work with from the AC 30th anniversary committee, including staff from the University Library and UC Berkeley faculty to curate historical files for a virtual library exhibit. Most, but not all, of the historical files have already been gathered or identified by the committee, so the student will play an active role in the creative design of the virtual exhibit that will be hosted on the University Library website as well as the American Cultures Center website. In addition, the student will work closely with the American Cultures Center staff to interview current and past AC faculty on the origins and importance of the AC Requirement.
