Archaeology of Honduras

This project will contribute to completion of reports on archaeological field projects conducted in Honduras between 1980 and 2009 and preparation of original data for digital archiving in the US and Honduras.

Role: Selected apprentice(s) will work on entering data currently in paper files into computer databases, reviewing original field forms, digitizing forms, and creating/modifying databases tracking these irreplaceable records from excavations of sites ranging from the earliest known village in Honduras (dating before 1500 BC) to a colonial to Republican era town that grew up around a Spanish fort, constructed with the labor of African and Indigenous people.

Data to be organized include records of excavations, records of analysis of pottery, stone tools, and other artifacts, and records of photographs taken during the projects. There are two ultimate goals to the project: (1) to support final publications of projects in the form of books and in some cases articles; and (2) preparation of a "virtual archive" to be deposited in permanent storage in sites in the US and Honduras.

Qualifications: Students with an interest in archaeology, or in the prehispanic history of Central America, are especially encouraged to apply. Some understanding of Spanish is helpful but not required.

Hours: 3-5 hrs
