Integrative Biology
Applications for Spring 2025 are closed for this project.
The Angelo Coast Range Reserve is a UC Berkeley Natural Reserve System site in Mendocino County, on the South Fork of the Eel River. Angelo is the site of numerous historical and current UC Berkeley research studies, and collections by UC Berkeley Natural History museums.
The proposed research project is to compile species lists for Angelo Coast Range reserve based on museum specimens, online databases, research papers, iNaturalist records. The successful applicant will work with the Angelo Coast Range Reserve director on designing a database for plant and animal species that occur on Angelo Coast Range Reserve. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the design of a biological inventory for an ecologically important site in California.
Role: The student will take the lead on gathering specimen records from online and museum sources. The student may choose a taxonomic group(s) to work on. The student will meet regularly with the director and faculty director of Angelo Coast Range Reserve to discuss database design, and incorporation of species lists into the Reserve website (angelo.ucnrs.org). Other potential projects include: working with and processing camera trap data, and developing non-destructive biodiversity monitoring protocols for the Reserve. The student may work onsite occasionally at Angelo Coast Range Reserve if they are interested, but this is not a requirement.
Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in: biodiversity science, natural history, and/or data science. Independence, strong communication skills, and enthusiasm for natural history is essential, taxonomic training and web site design skills would be highly desirable.
