PROJECT 1. The Central Valley towns of Allensworth is partnering with Gadgil Lab and Health Research for Action at UC Berkeley on a research project funded by the Environmental Protection Agency and National Alliance for Water Innovation. This project is about assessing community perspectives on water safety, community education, and testing a new technology for safe drinking water in these rural commmunities and delivering STEM education about water safety and health at K-12 Schools.
We will be testing a new technology for removing arsenic from water. The goal is to make this technology available and affordable to rural California communities in need. This new technology, called Air Cathode Assisted Iron Electrocoagulation (ACAIE), is small in size and has the potential to provide low cost, safe drinking water. This is an early testing phase of the new technology, so we will not be able to provide safe drinking water for any person to consume; that can happen after more testing.
In addition to testing this technology, we will be seeking to understand community views and acceptability of this technology. This will entail speaking and working with people in the local community along with local experts in water safety and health. We will ask questions about community views about water safety and health, community acceptability of testing a new technology, and ways to educate and communicate information about water safety and health with the community.
