Morphometric analysis of glial cells in glaucoma pathogenesis

John Flanagan, Professor
Optometry

Closed. This professor is continuing with Fall 2024 apprentices on this project; no new apprentices needed for Spring 2025.

This project employs immunohistochemistry techniques to delve into glial cell intricacies in glaucoma, followed by a detailed morphometric analysis using Imaris software. By combining these advanced methodologies, we aim to uncover subtle cellular variations associated with glaucoma pathogenesis.

Role: The student will actively contribute to our research project by operating a confocal microscope to capture high-resolution images of glial cells (astrocytes and microglia). Responsibilities include sample preparation, optimizing imaging parameters, and ensuring the accuracy of data acquisition.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate should have a background in biology, coupled with an interest in learning laboratory techniques like histology, immunohistochemistry, operating a confocal microscope, and image analysis.

Hours: 12 or more hours
