Language Justice Project Assistance

Brooke Lober, Staff Researcher
Center for Interdisciplinary Critical Inquiry

Applications for Fall 2026 are closed for this project.

The Center for Interdisciplinary Critical Inquiry at UC Berkeley's project, "A Counter-Imaginary in Authoritarian Times," is the host of a new initiative called "Language Justice," a collaboration with the organization Respond: Crisis Translation (RCT), an abolitionist language justice organization. In partnership with this collective of translators and interpreters working in crisis zones, this initiative seeks to develop educational and public programming on translation within a language justice paradigm, while supporting the transnationally networked, community-based work of RCT.

Activities of the project may include training in the technical skills and the historical and ethical framework of language justice; (b) developing a digital archive and media lab; (c) contributing to research to be utilized by practitioners of language justice; and (d) collaboratively producing public programming to develop academic perspectives on language justice and to teach the ethics and practice of translation for human rights work.

Role: Potential tasks for undergraduate research assistants include:

-creating media and communications, including social media, websites, podcast episodes, and more

-assisting with the creation of trainings and teach-ins (scheduling, logistics, and production of educational materials)

-contributing to research on language justice, in cooperation with RCT

Qualifications: This is a great project for a student who is multilingual, who has lived experience as a migrant, and/or who is developing a critical analysis of the way that language affects borders, migration, and the experience of people on journeys of migration.

This is also a great project for any student who is focused on migrant justice, who is interested in multilingualism, and who wants to engage in research, events organizing, and media production.
