UCSF Neuro-Spine Clinical Research Assistant

The UCSF Spine Center is a leading contributor to the American Spine Registry, a nationwide initiative dedicated to improving outcomes for patients undergoing cervical and lumbar spine surgery through the collection of longitudinal clinical data. Our research team investigates minimally invasive spine surgery, predictors of cancer recurrence and complications in spinal tumor patients, and the comparative effectiveness of surgical approaches for conditions such as cervical myelopathy.

Research assistants will remotely contact patients after surgery to collect patient-reported outcomes, review electronic medical records for retrospective research databases, and support ongoing clinical studies. Students will also have opportunities to shadow neurosurgeons in clinic and assist with in-person research activities, including patient recruitment and data collection.

This project is conducted under the mentorship of Dr. Lee Tan, Dr. Praveen Mummaneni, Dr. Nima Alan, and Dr. Jang Yoon. Applicants selected for this position will work closely with our collaborative neurosurgical research team and gain exposure to a broad range of clinical research projects.

Role: Undergraduate will:
1. Communicate with patients within the inclusion criteria of the study projects to collect patient reported outcomes by phone
2. Enter data into the electronic data capture systems for research projects or retrospective databases.
3. Participate in bi-weekly Zoom research meetings with the attendings, fellows, residents, and research staff. 4
4. With experience, students may participate in writing abstracts, papers, and textbook chapters.

Qualifications: Preference is given to incoming sophomores and juniors.

Day-to-day supervisor for this project: Catherine Ravikumar, Staff Researcher

Hours: 9-11 hrs

Off-Campus Research Site: Assistants are expected to complete 4 hours of remote work per week. Assistants are expected to come in-person to the UCSF Spine Center (Parnassus Campus) once a week, for 3-4 hours.
