Berkeley Judicial Institute Research Apprentice
Denise Neary, Director of Judicial Education
Berkeley Judicial Institute
Closed. This professor is continuing with Fall 2023 apprentices on this project; no new apprentices needed for Spring 2024.
The Berkeley Judicial Institute (BJI) aims to establish an effective bridge between the legal academy and the judiciary for the primary purpose of promoting an ethical, resilient and independent judiciary. By creating this much needed synergy between the legal academy and the judiciary, BJI also seeks to address the concern that legal scholarship has become less relevant to the actual work that judges do. BJI is an Institute within Berkeley law, directed by Judge Jeremy Fogel, the former Director of the Federal Judicial Center. The apprentices would have the opportunity to assist in several aspects of the Institute’s work as it takes shape.
Role: BJI is seeking apprentices to help with a few different projects. This includes 1-2 apprentices to work on an ongoing qualitative study of federal court responses to the COVID-19 pandemic. Duties may include assisting with qualitative interviews, note-taking, analyzing qualitative data, and other supporting research tasks. Interested students may also assist with planning and coordinating (mostly virtual) events for the Institute. Applicants should indicate which roles interests them when applying.
Qualifications: Experience with interview based research or knowledge of the federal courts is helpful, but not necessary. Students interested in event planning should describe their experience and interest in the role.
Hours: to be negotiated
