The Democracy + Media Lab seeks students with strong writing and/or digital media skills to assist in developing articles, visual media, documentary production, and podcasts. Successful candidates will join a team of other students to plan, record, edit, and publish research materials on social justice and democracy in the American hemisphere. We build skills to develop written, audio, and video research materials. Responsibilities include all phases of research with opportunities for creative work, editing, curating, and working with transcriptions of talks and events, updating a project website, events, and event planning.

Role: This academic year (2024-25) the D+M Lab is focusing on two specific projects. The first is a year long project called Dialogues of Democracy in which undergrad and grads will ahve the opportunity to learn about the Maya Kosmovision and travel with our team to document the Diaolgues of Knowledge in Guatemala and California. We seek students interested in audiovisual story-telling and documentary/archival projects. The second project is an art exhibit planned for the Ethnic Studies Library in Spring 2025. Students will learn curation and event planning, print and web-based media. Production responsibilities will be negotiated at a level that is appropriate for specific learning goals involving various phases of the production process.
Qualifications: Passionate about social justice, research, visual media, journalism, and/or performing arts. Ability to summarize, synthesize, and analyze information and research/texts. Strong organizational skills, self-directed. Experience producing sound, video, websites or graphics is a plus. Spanish language familiarity a plus (but not required).
