Resurgent Nationalisms and Populist Politics: South Africa, India, and the United States in a Global Frame

Applications for Fall 2024 are closed for this project.
I am working on a book that compares the rise of right-wing nationalisms and populist politics in South Africa, India and the U.S. since the end of the Cold War. Instead of seeing the three countries as separate cases or bounded units, the idea is to bring them into the same frame in mutually illuminating ways. The book grows out of a symposium I organized in Stockholm in 2018. A video is available at:

I have edited a special issue of a journal on Resurgent Nationalisms and Populist Politics in the Neoliberal Age, including an essay expanding on this lecture, that is also a summary of the book and is available at https://www.tandfonline.com/toc/rgab20/current. Entitled Why Did It Take So Long? Trump-Bannonism in a Global Frame, the essay argues that paying close attention to South Africa and India lets us see processes in the U.S. in new ways. The book will expand on this essay.
Role: The research assistance I require entails tracking down, reading, and summarizing additional references that are relevant to each of the chapters. In addition, I need help with tracking down and organizing references.
Qualifications: In addition to a general interest in the topic and the three countries, please specify classes you have taken that are relevant to the project. Familiarity with Zotero or related referencing systems is also an advantage.
