Developing Effective Assessment Approaches for Cumulative Impacts and Driving Environmental Health Equity in Underserved Communities

Jason Su, Associate Researcher
Public Health

Applications for Fall 2025 are closed for this project.

The overarching objective of this proposal is to create comprehensive cumulative impact indices that encompass the effects of both chemical and non-chemical stressors at the community level throughout the entire State. These indices will be developed using scientifically rigorous metrics, thereby furnishing robust tools to inform policy formulation including environmental justice at community and state tiers. The community engagement activities proposed within this research have the potential to serve as a blueprint for other communities seeking to enhance our cumulative assessment results for their own distinct cumulative impacts assessment at the local level. Our vision is to catalyze transformative change, reduce health disparities, and lay the foundation for a more just and equitable environmental landscape for underserved communities.

Role: The student will participate in scientific computing for creating comprehensive cumulative impact indices through R language, and draft papers for publication.

The student’s key learning outcomes will include increased understanding of the chemical and non-chemical stressors facing disadvantaged communities and the cumulative impact they might have. They will also learn how to estimate cumulative environmental impact in a scientifically sound way. Further, they will learn how to implment those concepts into practice through increased proficiency in scientific computing with R.

Qualifications: Required skills include strong writing skills, familiar with scientific computing in R and demonstrate an interest in studying the impacts of environment on health.

Day-to-day supervisor for this project: Eahsan Shahriary, Post-Doc

Hours: 9-11 hrs

Off-Campus Research Site: We would meet weekly for an hour over Zoom
