Kimberly Vinall, Executive Director
Berkeley Language Center
Applications for Fall 2025 are closed for this project.
AI language technologies offer new potentials and new challenges for language instruction and language learning. This project aims to explore how students actually use AI tools for language learning while writing.
This project is hosted by the Berkeley Language Center (BLC), whose mission is to support research in applied language studies and the learning and teaching of languages and cultures across campus.
Role: Apprentices will support the realization of the research project. This will include learning how to develop an appropriate literature review and how to collect and analyze data (observations, stimulated recalls, semi-structured interviews). In addition to supporting the realization of the research project, apprentices that are able to continue the entire year will support the organization of a conference on AI, to be held in Feb. 2026. Tasks will include, for example, contributing to the conference format; communicating with different audiences and preparing materials.
In the process, apprentices will be introduced to the field of applied language studies broadly speaking and language learning and technology specifically while gaining hands-on research experience. Please note that apprentices will be required to attend at least one BLC function.
Qualifications: Qualifications: • An interest in developing research / writing skills. • Experience with language and culture learning is preferred, although not required. • Self-motivated and open to engaging in collaborative work.
Day-to-day supervisor for this project: Dr. Emily Hellmich
