Academic Publishing & Production with L2Journal

Academic publication is an essential part of the research process, a way for researchers to communicate and disseminate their contributions to a wider audience. This URAP project aims to mentor undergraduates in academic writing and publication through support of the L2Journal, an open-access, peer reviewed academic journal focused on the teaching and learning of world languages, particularly languages other than English.

This project is hosted by the Berkeley Language Center (BLC), whose mission is to support research in applied language studies and the learning and teaching of languages and cultures across campus.

Role: Apprentices will take on the role of Production Assistant for L2Journal and will support and learn about the following:
1. effective writing skills
2. editing (copyediting, content editing) academic journal articles
3. layout of articles, including supporting digital accessibility
4. academic publishing process (e.g., manuscript preparation, submission, peer review)
5. journal/article promotion, including webinars and launch events
6. current developments in the fields of applied linguistics, world language pedagogy, and language education

Qualifications: An interest in developing writing skills; Attention to detail; Experience with language and culture learning is preferred, although not required.

Day-to-day supervisor for this project: Dr. Emily Hellmich

Hours: 3-5 hrs
