Bias in forensic speech perception
Alexandra Pfiffner, Professor
Linguistics
Applications for Spring 2024 are closed for this project.
This is a forensic linguistics project examining possible sources of bias in the perception of disputed utterances. “Disputed utterances” refers to audio recordings used as evidence in legal cases where there is uncertainty / no consensus over what was said. This is common due to poor audio quality in cases like cctv and police interrogation rooms. The goal of this project is to develop a perception experiment to test various social and situational factors that could bias how someone perceives a disputed utterance.

1) recruiting speakers to record stimuli for the experiment
2) administering the experiment
3) helping organize and interpret experimental results for further analysis
