Evolutionary and developmental perspectives on lifecourse stress and Long COVID

Andrew Kim, Professor
Anthropology

Applications for Spring 2026 are closed for this project.

This project will examine the roles of early life stress and lifecourse trauma exposure on long COVID outcomes. Long COVID is a cluster of symptoms that is known to result from a cascade of pathophysiological mechanisms that persist beyond the acute stage of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Growing research suggests that individuals with a history of developmental stress and trauma exposure may face greater risk of long COVID, or post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 infection. Neuroendocrine, immunological, and psychosocial processes may underlie these long-term pathways of disease risk and may contribute to the etiology and severity of long COVID complications. This project seeks to examine evolutionary and developmental perspectives on stress that may help explain the relationship between stress, immune function, and long COVID.
