Applications for Fall 2024 are closed for this project.
This project is concerned with the classification, quanitification, analysis and publication of the ca. 20 tons of ancient Roman pottery recovered in the Palatine East Excavations in downtown Rome. The material, which dates to the period ca. AD 50 – AD 450, comes from all over the Mediterranean world, and provides important insights into the organization of the economy of the Roman empire and the supply of the ancient city of Rome.
Role: The elements of the project being carried out at Berkeley and in which apprentices would be involved include the photographing and description of ceramic thick sections and thin sections, the updating of databases, the archiving of profile drawings of pottery and the production of digital versions of these, and the working up of various forms of documentation for publication on the project web site.
Qualifications: Strong interests in the ancient world and archaeological ceramics are essential. Good computer skills, including the use of Access, Excel, Adobe Illustrator, and Photoshop would be helpful and some knowledge of web site management would be highly useful.
