Identification of disease mediators in human stem cell-derived kidney organoids.

Gabriel Loeb, Professor
Medicine, UCSF

Applications for Spring 2026 are closed for this project.

Our laboratory is developing induced pluripotent stem cell derived kidney organoids as:
1) Models of human kidney disease
2) Models amenable to CRISPR screens
with the goal of identifying new pathways and therapeutic targets for kidney diseases.

Role: Role: Candidates will work with a PhD scientist in the laboratory and the professor. We are a young and growing laboratory, so the student will have significant opportunities to learn directly from the professor (who spends lots of time in the laboratory) and other trainees in the laboratory.

1) Generating DNA constructs to facilitate CRISPR screens.
2) Immunofluorescence imaging of kidney organoids.
3) Culture and maintenance of stem cells and kidney organoids.

Qualifications: This position is open to all who are highly motivated and very organized. Research experience with cloning, immunofluorescence, or mammalian cell culture is preferred.

Please include in the application

(1) Your career plan
(2) Schedule of committed hours to perform research in the lab (please exclude the commute time). The laboratory is at UCSF Mission Bay (555 Mission Bay Blvd S, San Francisco).
(3) Prior research/laboratory experience if any.
(4) (optional) experience that demonstrates attention to detail.

Qualifications: Desired but not essential qualifications (competitive candidates will have significant experience with at least one of these techniques).
Experience with cloning, PCR, preparation of bacterial plasmids.
Experience with immunofluorescence, staining and imaging.
Experience with mammalian cell culture and aseptic technique.

Hours: 9-11 hrs
