The Berkeley Center on Comparative Equality and Anti-Discrimination Law
Open. Apprentices needed for the fall semester. Enter your application online beginning August 21st. The deadline to apply is Monday, August 31st, 4pm.
The Berkeley Center on Comparative Equality Anti-Discrimination Law brings together academics, advocates and activists from six continents to address issues of systemic inequality and discrimination. The Center is directed by Law Professors Joy Milligan and David Oppenheimer. We are assisted by two recent Berkeley graduates who were URAP students, Administrative Director Sally Sheehan and Ford Foundation Fellow Brittany Postle. Much of our research, administration and leadership is done by Berkeley students, including URAP students. Our current projects include working groups on Gender Justice, Disability Rights, Pay Equity, Global Systemic Racism, LGBTQI+ Rights, Digital Equality, Climate Equality, and Equity and Criminal Justice.
Role: We will match students, based on their expressed interests, to research projects offered by our individual working groups in the areas of Gender Justice, Disability Rights, Pay Equity, Global Systemic Racism, LGBTQI+ Rights, Digital Equality, Climate Equality, and Equity and Criminal Justice. Along with substantive research on equality law issues in those areas, students will have the chance to help plan conferences and webinars, as well as to edit our e-journal and draft our annual report.
Through the research apprenticeship, students will gain exposure to global anti-discrimination law and policy, along with the practicalities of operating a research institute.
Qualifications: Professionalism, interest in equality law, close attention to detail, and comfort working with Google Docs, Word, and social media.
Day-to-day supervisor for this project: Sally Sheehan, Staff Researcher
Hours: 6-8 hrs
Off-Campus Research Site: Most of our work is done remotely, but we will have some meetings at the Law Building on the Berkeley campus. Our default meeting time for fall 2026 will be biweekly Fridays, 1-2pm. Note: Center co-director David Oppenheimer is also selecting URAP students to work with him on several projects, with the URAP project title Comparative Equality and Diversity Research. Students working with Professor Oppenheimer will be part of the Center community, but in most cases will be assigned to work on Professor Oppenheimer’s book projects, not Center projects. Students may apply for both the opportunity to work with the Center and the opportunity to work with Professor Oppenheimer.
