Juana Maria Rodriguez, Professor

Closed (1) Latinas, Sexual Labor, & Visual Culture

Closed. This professor is continuing with Spring 2021 apprentices on this project; no new apprentices needed for Fall 2021.

This is to support the completion of my book manuscript which is about the representation of Latina sex workers across a variety of visual media (documentary, photography, pornography, art). It covers from 1870 to the present moment and explores the different affective responses that photography and biography produce.

The major role for the URAP UG is to keep the images in the manuscript organized, keeping track of the images, the artist, date, medium, the archive that it came from, any required permissions, and the description that will be used in the book. It will also involve reviewing the manuscript to make sure that the bibliography is complete. As a result of their work on this project, students will get a clearer sense of how archives, permissions, and editing in academic publishing function.

Qualifications: Because the manuscript is about the representation of sex workers, students should be comfortable engaging with sexually explicit visual material. Some titles are in Spanish and/or French, so any experience working with a foreign language is welcomed.

Weekly Hours: 3-5 hrs
