Air-water flows

Simo Makiharju, Professor
Mechanical Engineering

Applications for Fall 2025 are closed for this project.

Gas-liquid flows play an important role in the environment, and in many transportation, biological and industrial processes. The FLOW lab is presently studying 1) structures of gas jets in water, 2) gas entertainment by plunging water jets, 3) air-water flows for frictional drag reduction, and 4) forces on objects in bubbly flows.

Role: The student will be matched to one of the four projects listed above and will collaborate with a graduate student, or the faculty lab director. Student will learn what we are trying to understand better, and why. Work is primarily experimental, so students will also become more familiar with several experimental techniques.

Qualifications: Self motivated. Likes working in the laboratory, and safety conscious.
Skills in two or more of the following are a plus: a) solidworks, b) matlab, c) labview, d) machining.

Hours: 6-8 hrs

Off-Campus Research Site: in-person lab component
