HOW CAN WE IMPROVE EDUCATION through organizations outside schools?
This research is a mixed-methods research project, understanding the role of “outside school” organizations (research, philanthropic, nonprofit orgs) on education systems and school improvement. This semester we will focus on "IMPROVING INSTRUCTIONAL IMPROVEMENT IN CALIFORNIA" by looking at how the state can support improvement through/ with outside organizations. We will also try to compare California with other states to know how to optimize instructional improvement.
Role: The undergraduate students will be tasked to transcribe interviews of school principals, do quantitative data analysis (if interested), and perform literature review on a topic of your choice: (1) politics of education in general, (2) politics of education in developing countries, and (3) generative AI and teachers' work.
At the end of the semester, the student will have learned the following skills: (a) qualitative coding and analysis of research data, (b) quantitative analysis for social scientific research, (c) critical assessment of research literature, and (d) writing skills for social scientific research.
*Dr. Trinidad also has a new book, SUBTLE WEBS: HOW LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS SHAPE US EDUCATION, and may ask help from creative-minded apprentices to help with the promotion and book tour. :)
Qualifications: We are looking for students who are: (1) interested in social science and/or education research, (2) invested in educational improvement and systems change, and (3) able to work with a group of hardworking students and research mentors.
Hours: to be negotiated
Off-Campus Research Site: The work will have a hybrid set-up, where we will have in-person meetings at Berkeley Way West and some work that can be done remotely. The hours are flexible.
