Forest Pavilion / From Wood to Tree II

Liz Galvez, Professor
Architecture

Applications for Fall 2025 are closed for this project.

Project Description: From Wood to Tree is an open air pavilion that explores environmental methodologies for returning lumber to the forest by examining the qualities of deadwood and degradation as a possibility for design. Much has been said about the making of wood, and yet one of its most prescient qualities as a material is its ability to degrade. From Wood to Tree takes on bio-materiality to design synchronously with the degradation of wood, its processes and to intervene in cycles of building waste, carbon, respiration, and forest health. The installation begins by taking recycled 2x6’s and transforming them into mass timber beams. These beams will be deployed as a pavilion, to return to the forest at the Russell Research Station. This project is in collaboration with Professor Paul Mayencourt’s Wood Lab at the Richmond Field Station.

Role: Tasks & Learning Outcomes: The URAP Student will be responsible for working closely with the PI to develop documentation and models to develop the design of the pavilion. Additionally, the URAP student will be involved in construction of the pavilion beginning in the spring. This position requires weekly, in-person meetings. Learning outcomes will emphasize addressing real-world environmental issues through architectural representation, utilizing building processes as a research methodology to rigorously reframe specific aspects of building culture.

Qualifications: Qualifications: Personal Skills: Detail Oriented, Clear communicator, Self-directed.Software Skills: Adobe Creative Suite, Rhinoceros, Writing and Editing. Making skills: Detail Oriented, model-making, simple construction and openness to learning experimental methods of making.

Preference will be given to architecture students in their Junior or Senior year. Interested applicants should submit their application via the URAP portal and send their architecture portfolio as a PDF document under 25MB to egalvez@berkeley.edu for full consideration to the position.
