Background: The Center for Research on Expanding Educational Opportunity (CREEO), launched by Faculty Director Travis J. Bristol, at UC Berkeley School of Education, uses research to shape policy and practice in service of creating opportunities for students and adults historically at the margins to move closer to the center in the United States and internationally.
This project will focus on CREEO’’s efforts to start a UC-HBCU partnership that CREEO is in the process of launching. CREEO is seeking a dedicated Undergraduate Research Apprentice to support our efforts for this project including support with the UC-HBCU Grant Application, which: “seeks to improve diversity and strengthen UC graduate programs by investing in relationships between UC faculty and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs)”. CREEO’s goal is to increase the number of graduate applicants in the UC Berkeley School of Education.

The primary responsibility of the apprentice will be to assist CREEO staff with various components of the UC-HBCU grant application that will provide funding for this partnership.
This may include:
• Coordinating outreach efforts to partnering HBCUs or UCB departments/partners
• Research/data collection to support various components of the application. This may include literature reviews and compiling resources to support the initiative.
• Support with writing out components of the application
• Keeping track of grant requirements, and supporting the team with reminders
Additionally, the apprentice may have opportunities to contribute to other research projects, grants, or initiatives led by CREEO staff as needed.
Role: Research apprentices will receive guidance and work with the CREEO team in preparation for the UC-HBCU partnership work. The undergraduate will help collect, prepare, and assist in various components of the application. Note, the UC-HBCU partnership is dependent on the successful submission of the application which is still in process, and with the CREEO team the Apprentice will be advised in areas to support.
Research apprentices will collaborate with the CREEO Team and also be able to work independently carrying out the following tasks below. This position offers hands-on experience with grant requirements and write-ups , program coordination, and data analysis. Students will gain insights into the role of educational institutions in fostering equity, with a chance to work on impactful initiatives. Mentorship and professional development will be integral to this experience.
Supporting and assisting the CREEO Team with the successful submission of the UC-HBCU grant application that will support a new UC-HBCU partnership led by CREEO.
This may include, but is not limited to:
• Reviewing literature and data
• Strong writing and verbal skills.
• Ability to receive guidance and take initiative in independently conducting literature reviews and synthesizing findings
• Ability to take initiative and ask questions for support.
• Assisting with preparation of information for dissemination
• Detail-oriented and skilled in organization, with the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
• Participating in scheduled meetings
•Keep a adequate safeguards to protect the confidentiality of the information collected in accordance with UCB and CREEO Guidelines – see New security standards that went into effect on April 1
As part of their hour/commitment, research assistants will meet weekly and attend CREEO team meetings (one hour per week) and/or the project director
Qualifications: • Passionate about equity and access in education.
• Strong writing and verbal skills, and ability to review supporting literature
• Have some familiarity with topics, issues, and experiences related to teachers and student experiences, education, and communities of color (e.g., coursework, personal experience).
• Desirable but not essential, with grant applications and proposals
• There is no additional language requirement,
• Lab days for this project are: TBD.
