This project offers an exciting opportunity to serve as an Exhibition Research Assistant for a Jewish timeline exhibition at the Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life, slated to open in Fall 2027. You'll delve into the extensive Magnes Collection to identify, research, and interpret objects that illustrate or respond to pivotal moments in Jewish history. The goal is to research material culture objects and art pieces, exploring their biographies and diverse uses, and crafting compelling texts for both database records and exhibition labels.
Qualifications: Students will gain hands-on experience in collection research. Tasks include searching the Magnes database to identify and select objects, conducting in-depth research on each object's history and context using primary and secondary sources, and crafting clear, engaging descriptions for public audiences.
Students will collaborate closely with the supervisor, contributing to the overall curatorial narrative and historical storytelling. This role will develop skills in critical thinking on historical narratives, object-based learning, writing for public audiences and collaborative teamwork.
Ideal candidates are curious, independent, and detail-oriented, with strong research and writing skills. An interest in history, culture, and museum/archival work is essential.
